I went gigging Sunday morning around 2am. Me, a couple flashlights, and a three prong gig. The plan was to sneak up on some flounder and sheepshead and invite them to dinner as the guest of honor. I’m very glad I went, even if I went alone.

Build Your Own Pole Spear
I won’t call spearfishing my “current” obsession, but I’ll call it an ongoing one. Most of my trips have been in rather shallow water, using only a mask, snorkel, and pole spear. Occasionally I wear flippers, but for the most part, I’m in sheltered areas in and around downed trees and mangrove roots. This tends to lead […]
Thrifty Food Buys for 9 August 2012
This is my only “regular” weekly post, and it revolves around stores in my area, and food that we eat. We practice “Eat what you store, store what you eat”. Since I try to eat “Paleo”, this means very little food that includes any grains, legumes, or refined sugars. I will have a few of […]
South River Outfitters 2012 Fleet Sale, or Zach gets a kayak!
It’s been about three weeks since the South River Outfitters had their fleet sale. My young friend, Zach, as well as his father, went with me to the sale. Zach wanted to buy what I considered to be the best kayak of the sale. The same one I went to look at. Knowing of the […]
Pork Fat Rules! or “How to Render Your Own Lard”
Paleo gold! Well..how about ivory? Whatever, its TASTY stuff that I’ve been trying to get my hands on for a while. Yes, I know you can buy it at any grocery store around here. But did you know every can I’ve looked at in every store in three counties all contain “BHA and BHT” ? […]
Emily’s Hot Bean trick, or “Knickerbean 101”
My youngest daughter, Emily, has been talking about “hot beans” for a couple months now, and has been wanting to show me a “trick” you can do with them. Being a practical joker myself, I looked forward to whatever she was going to show me. And while the trick itself is very minor, it does have […]
Long Term Power Loss, and How We Practice For It
I saw on TV today that another tropical depression was heading in my general direction, though currently not projected to hit near my home, but close enough to adversely affect local weather for a week or two. Flipping through the channels, I ran across an episode of the Simpsons where Bart was trying to deal […]
Tomato Juice from Long Term Preps, or “How to Make a Bloody Pirate after a Hurricane”
One of the things we stock plenty of is tomatoes in various forms – sauce, diced, and paste. One of the things we don’t stock up on is tomato juice, though we have made some tomato-based V-8 knockoff that I called “V-13” for the 13 different veggies we put in it. Unfortunately, its a bit […]
Thrifty Food Buys for 31`July 2012
This weekly post will revolve around stores in my area, and food that we eat. Saving money by buying in bulk is no good if you are storing food you will never eat. “Eat what you store, store what you eat” will be my guidelines. Since I try to eat “Paleo”, this means very little […]
Quick Dehydrator Biltong
Biltong is a cousin of jerky, but incorporates vinegar into the process, and omits nitrates and nitrites, common preservatives found in jerky, at least today’s version. Another difference is that biltong is typically not smoked, something I thought I would miss. I don’t, though I would like to try a bit of smoked biltong eventually. […]
