Love `em or hate `em, mullet are a vital part of the local saltwater ecosystem. This is the time of year that the water temps start to drop and the mullet start to head to warmer southern waters for the winter, in order to spawn.
If a person were tempted to put some mullet up, say canning them, now would be the idea time to load up.
The butcher at my local grocery store is an avid fisherman, fishing almost daily. I talk to him every time I see him to get the latest report. Over the weekend, he was telling me about a school of jack crevalle about a foot long started working the mullet, only to have the realization that they were in the middle of the food chain, as a large school of sharks started to eat them in turn. Mother Nature at her finest, in my opinion. Around here, nothing is as impressive as watching acres of baitfish get worked over by acres of predator fish.
If you get a chance, get out to the beach and watch the action, it is extraordinary. Mornings and evenings are best, but you’ll have action throughout the day.
I need to get out there myself…hope to see you there!
Peace,
