“You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need”“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” is a song by the Rolling Stones on their 1969 album Let It Bleed. Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, it was named as the 100th greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone magazine in its 2004 list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time“.
I have a friend from high school that was big into music, played at least a couple instruments, was in a band (not his first), and was pretty good at making music, considering he was only 17. I enjoyed hanging out with him, he always seemed to have a plan for his future, something I STILL don’t have.
We graduated and like many young adults we drifted apart, and I lost touch with him.
From time to time, I would hear about him, and heard he was still chasing success in the music industry.
About 15 years later, I reconnected with him on Facebook, and we started to catch up. He filled me in on many of his adventures chasing his dream, telling me about opening up for various big name groups, playing a regular circuit, cutting albums, and still chasing his dream of making a success out of his one love, music.
I enjoyed hearing from him again, as he was a solid guy in high school, and as I recall it, was mature beyond his years, at least for a 17 year old. The part that stuck with me from his story was when he told me that he was so busy chasing his dream of making a living playing music, that he never realized that somewhere along the way, he had achieved his dream and almost missed the fact that he had done so. While he never hit the Top 40, did a World Tour or played at the Superbowl, he was making a living playing music. And having FUN doing so.
Although he has moved on from this band, here is my buddy living the life with 7 Sharp 9:
