Phở 772 — Six Years Later

Had a chance to revist an old favorite this weekend.

Six years.

That’s how long it had been since we’d walked into Phở 772.

In that time, we’d eaten plenty of bánh mì, always looking for one that matched the first one we ever had there.

On our drive across the country as we were moving to Alaska, we were always on the lookout for good eats. And while living in Alaska, there were a plethora of Asian restaurants.

I hadn’t really thought about Alaska’s proximity to Asia.

Duh.

Anyhow, we found and tried a LOT of bánh mì sandwiches in our time away.

Plenty were good.

None quite met our initial introduction—our baseline sandwich.

Even when we made our own, though that was close!

Fast-forward about six years and I walked back into Phở 772.

I spotted Nick, part of the family that runs the restaurant.

“Hey, Nick.”

“Hey.”

Clearly just a reactionary reply.

Then he stopped.

Looked at me again.

“Wait. You’re back?”

Six years, and the man remembered me.

And wouldn’t you know it?

The sandwiches were still just as good.

So good, in fact, we took another pair home for Sunday brunch.

Then there’s the menu.

Vietnamese Subs — $9.85

Toasted French bread with pickled carrots, cilantro, cucumber, jalapeños, and your choice of grilled pork, beef, or chicken.

So damned unassuming.

That’s it.

Then you eat one.

They say trust a fat chef.

I can’t argue with that.

But you can also trust a guy who lost 60 pounds and see what he’s willing to fall off the wagon for.

Phở 772 bánh mì is my kryptonite.

Well…

One of them. 🤷

And here’s the crazy part I realized after writing this: over the last 24 hours, I’ve seen seven or eight bánh mì sandwiches come and go.

I ate two. Liz ate one. At one point there were three sitting on the table in front of me.

And I did not take one damn picture of any of them.

I’m that kind of asshole.

Peace,
db

P.S. I should add, this is not a paid advertisement or review. Just some old hillbilly trying to help a small family restaurant stay busy enough to stay open for my next bánh mì craving.

I was gone for about six years, and they’re still here.

Says a lot about their offerings.

Peace.
