Florida is FULL of unknown places, or at least places that most folks will drive by for years, and not realize what a gem they’ve been missing out on. Fishing spots, restaurants, mom and pop stores, shady rest spots, and other great places to add to your list of places to have been, at least once. […]

First try at Flounder Gigging
I went gigging Sunday morning around 2am. Me, a couple flashlights, and a three prong gig. The plan was to sneak up on some flounder and sheepshead and invite them to dinner as the guest of honor. I’m very glad I went, even if I went alone.
South River Outfitters 2012 Fleet Sale, or Zach gets a kayak!
It’s been about three weeks since the South River Outfitters had their fleet sale. My young friend, Zach, as well as his father, went with me to the sale. Zach wanted to buy what I considered to be the best kayak of the sale. The same one I went to look at. Knowing of the […]
Florida Lobster Mini-Season 2012
Today is mini-season, possibly one of the busiest days on the water all year. I’ve personally caught a few lobsters myself, but I wouldn’t even class my self as a novice. I plan on fixing that this year, as part of my “embrace where you are, she ain’t going to move to WV” attitude.
High Tech Maps
When I was about 14 years old, I was hunting on our 93-acre farm by myself. My father had told me that in orrder to best hunt a particular hill, I should follow the ridge line up, then when I got to the top, veer off to the right, and I would end up behind […]
Some days it’s “Fishing, some days it’s “Catching”
They call it “fishing” , and not “catching” for a reason….probably to do with my meager skill set, something I’m sure I share with the majority of folks that go fishing. Tides, sun, moon, stars, solunar tables, proper color, match the hatch, proper presentation, water temperature, the list goes on and on for the things that affect if […]
Revisiting an Old Friend – Home built Wooden Pirogue (Cheap Canoe)
I was stumbling around Green Deane’s forum, and ran across a post regarding pirogues, or flat bottom canoes made famous in Cajun country. It brought back memories of one I built during some down time right after a hurricane hit us, and we were sitting around waiting for civilization to get started back up.
A Kayak Trip to Boy Scout Island
Well, I think it’s Boy Scout Island…seems there is some confusion as to what spoil island is actually Boy Scout. I thought I would go with that title instead of “A Kayak Trip to the northernmost island south of the Stuart causeway”. It just doesn’t flow well….
Paleo Mole Crab Poppers or “With Baited Breath”
I love to fish, it’s a serious distraction to me. And while I try to learn as much as possible, I’ve grown to understand that they call it “fishing” rather than “catching” for a reason. I was fishing late one evening about 18 years ago with my oldest daughter, catching small
Lionfish Update – Maybe not such an issue here in Florida?
Remember this: Update: Eating Lionfish may be dangerous ??? Ciguatera is a nasty thing to experience. When I first read the email regarding ciguatera, I did my due diligence as well as I was able given the time I had on hand and my perceived sense of urgency. I have friends that eat lionfish frequently and would hate to think I could […]
