Review: Pecan Pie Larabar

Read my Larabar review intro here.

Eating Paleo around the holidays sometimes make me really regret my decision. Pecan pie is one of those. Look at this deliciousness:

NOT Paleo-approved
Basic corn syrup-based pecan pie recipe:
1 9″ unbaked pie shell
1 cup corn syrup (light or dark)
1 cup refined sugar
2 tablespoons butter (melted)
3 eggs (slightly beaten)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups pecans

In the recipe above, the first three ingredients are not Paleo and the fourth one is questionable. Most everyone can agree that corn syrup and refined sugar should be limited at best, and eliminated completely in a perfect world.

Either way, my days of eating that tasty treat at Thanksgiving are gone.

At least in that format. Enter Larabar’s Pecan Pie.

I had high hopes for this flavor. The ingredients were simple enough: dates, pecans, and almonds. NO corn syrup? I call BS! How can you get a pecan pie without the corn syrup?

Eat a Pecan Pie Larabar! It really DOES taste like pecan pie, and not a “Well, its close”. This doesn’t make me think I’m getting a weak substitute, I just think its a brownie instead of a pie. The flavor really headlines the pecans, as well it should they are the star of the product, right?

Moist, chewy, and just sweet enough, the flavor whisked me back to the days of eating those little Debby Snack cake version of pecan pies, only not so damned cloyingly sweet. (I’d actually gag after eating 4 or 5 of them…Oh to have THAT metabolism still…)

The Pecan Pie Larabars are going to be on the table at Thanksgiving for us this year, they are that close to the original, yet still OK for me to eat (again, Paleo-approved!). I’m sure we’ll have other more traditional things as well, but for me, I’ll be eating a Larabar instead. I’ll just tell everyone they are “Pecan Pie Brownies” and are healthy. That should keep my father in law away from them at least 🙂

On a 5 point scale, I’d like this one as a 4+. If I had one right now, I’d eat it, but I won’t drive out to get one this minute. But I’m thinking about it….

Peace,
db

Notes:

Shelf life is 12 months as packaged, according to the Larabar website. Vacuum sealing may increase that. Not sure I can let these sit on a shelf for more than a couple months, let alone more than 12….
