Thrifty Food Buys for 26 July 2012

This weekly post will revolve around stores in my area, and food that we eat. Saving money by buying in bulk is no good if you are storing food you will never eat. “Eat what you store, store what you eat” will be my guidelines. To me, this means very little food that includes any grains, legumes, or refined sugars. I will have a few of these items, but not many. I will also be buying in bulk, typically 20 or so of the items highlighted, in order to save over a longer period. I saved over 20% of my food bill last year buy buying in bulk, and eating food purchased at the previous year’s prices. Some items may require processing of some sort, canning, dehydrating, etc.

Stores I will be choosing from will be local to me, with most information being pulled from SouthernSavers.com. The stores available include Publix, Winn Dixie, SaveaLot, and WalMart.

I will also include some version of this intro every Wednesday.

Save-A-Lot options:

Not a lot new this week, the sale is carried over from last week.

Crystal 2 O Drinking water 24pk, 16.9 oz bottles $2.48 A decent price for bottled water for sporting events for our kids. Yes, we should use refillable bottles. I have to pick and choose my battles…..

Save-A-Lot regularly carries Buddig brand sliced lunch meats in 4oz packages for $1, as well as pepperoni and hard salami slices in 3.5 oz packages for $1. This is the meat we use for our Lacto-Paleo Ham-Wrapped Fried Cheese sticks. We buy some every time we stop in.

===============================================================

So, my plans for stocking up this week are mainly shelf-stockers, not much to have to prep for long term storage. This makes the week a great time to put up something we’ve grown or that we have foraged. (I’m thinking of trying to make some Sea Purslane Pickles, maybe I’ll get to it next week.)

These items above will get moved into our regular meal plans, extending our larder a bit, and saving us some money all at the same time.  Still not much noise from the hurricane season…Let’s hope it stays that way!

You know, like I always say…”just in case”.

Peace,

db

Notes:

Sea Purslane Pickles

Preparation time about 15 minutes,including picking the purslane.

Use any size jar with a plastic lid. Narrow-necked bottles can be a problem. Fill your jar or bottle with freshly-harvested purslane cut into two-inches pieces. Leave a little space at the top. Fill the jar or bottle with room-temperature apple cider vinegar, being sure to completely cover the plant material. Cover. (Metal lids will corrode; do not use.) Label, including date. This is ready to use in six weeks; but will stay good for up to a year.

To use: A tablespoon of purslane vinegar on cooked greens, beans, and salads adds wonderful flavor along with lots of minerals. You can also eat the pickled purslane right out of the bottle or add it to salads or beans.
