FloridaHillbilly – The Daily Process

I originally started writing this as a means of getting things off my chest. As I started to develop a few readers, I realized some of my BS was actually entertaining, possibly even educational.

This has evolved into a daily post, Monday through Friday. I write about things I see, hear, read, or do, all revolving around personal responsibility, freedom, and self-reliance from a guy raised in rural West Virginia, now living in urban south Florida – the country mouse living in the big city, so to speak.

Here is my daily routine:xp55

Since I try to post five days a week, I’m always looking for a subject. I’ve started carrying a camera with me every where I go, part of my EDC equipment. I take pictures of everything and anything, thankful that we are now in the digital age and no longer have to develop every shot.

Products on store shelves, weeds growing in the sidewalk cracks, sunrises, birds, spiders, gadgets, ducks, rabbits, chickens…the list goes on and on. I transfer everything daily into a folder with labeled with the date. I also shoot and transfer video the same way, depositing it in the daily folder.

My writing usually takes place after dark, usually after the kids have gone to bed, sometimes starting as late as midnight. I will usually drag my feet if I have no clue what I want to write about, and when I have those moments, I open up my folders and go through my pictures looking for something I want to write about. I always come up with something.

Other times, when I have something to write about, I’ll sit down earlier in the evening, punch out the article, format it, and submit it, scheduling the publishing at 6am the following morning. So, if you want to know if I have had trouble coming up with something to write about, check the publish times. If its NOT 6am, I struggled to find something to write about. A recent article I struggled to get out was this one about wants vs needs at Christmas.

While it can be done that way, very seldom do I actually write posts ahead of time, stockpiling them for the future. Most of my writing is done on an as-needed basis, fresh and written within the last few hours of posting.

This article is unusual, since it is currently 1 in the afternoon on a Saturday.  I’ve not posted any real writing in two days, feel like I’m slacking, and came up with a topic I wanted to write about. It works out that way sometimes.

Other times, I ‘ll answer an email, read a post, or talk with someone that has a question that I (believe that) I know the answer to. And then I’ll write it up. The rabbit cage article started that way.

Canned MulletOn a good day, I’ll have tried something, and it either worked wonderfully, or failed miserably, either way providing me with something to write about. Depending on your point of view, the canned mullet series (Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3) was that.

And oddly enough, some of my favorite writings seem to go unnoticed, while others I consider less than great get picked up and get lots of readers.  I’ll not point out either, btw. It’s not fair to the reader or the writer to pass my personal judgement on what I post.

I’ll close with this. I’m always looking to write about something. Drop me a line if you have a subject you’d like me to write about. Try to stick to articles about what I’ve already written though, you’ll be far more likely to get results from me.

And yes, I really do the things I’ve written about. Too much free time, and imagination….

(Canned mullet? REALLY??)

Peace,
db
