This is what I worked on last night, a coconut palm frond basket. I still need to trim up the ends, but I’m very happy with the results. I’ve always been intrigued by baskets, since they are like a portable pocket, and nothing is handier than a pocket! (Wow, say “pocket” five times…what a funny word).

Anyway, RidgeRunner’s wife has been making some awesome pine needle baskets, true show quality work, and I was inspired. My work is nothing as good as hers, but serviceable.

This is my second attempt, I made another one a day earlier, and while it will hold baseballs and apples, you really cannot use it to hold anything smaller. And while this one is not uniform, the first basket was downright ugly, so you’ll not get to see it. At least THIS basket can hold peanuts and berries.

I learned how to do this from watching a video I purchased about 2 years ago from http://www.hatsandbaskets.com/weavings/dvd/. I happened across a couple freshly cut palm fronds, so picked them up to give this a try. Now, I’m looking through all of the youtube videos that have been posted since my instructional video purchase, and I think youtube may have more info I need to learn.

I love the internet!

Peace.

  1. I have just returned from a holiday in St.Lucia where I bought a basket just like yours from a local selling them on the beach? I have been searching the internet to see if I can preserve it,however. I think the sad answer is that I can’t and it will just go brown.
    Well done on your attempt!

    1. I know of no way to make it stay green, sorry!

I’ve not touched a coconut frond in several years….your comment makes me want to go weave a hat!!!!

Thanks for the kind words, and for taking the time to post a comment!
