A Random Tuesday

Spent most of last night working on a Kindle hack/repair, so don’t have much to write about other than what I took up all of my evening (it’s 1am as I write this, having just finished with my project outlined below).
I purchased a used, working Kindle off of Craigslist, a Kindle Keyboard, with WiFi, for $65. Then off of Ebay, I purchased a Kindle Keyboard with WiFi and 3G (cellular internet access) that had a broken screen…

Gathering all of that, along with TWO “precision” screwdrivers, I swapped the good screen off of the WiFi only model onto the 3G model. Only took me about 4 hours – 30 minutes researching HOW, an hour actually doing it, 90 minutes of that being me searching for a second mini screwdriver since I somehow rounded the tip on the first one, and an hour doing it a SECOND time, since the first time I removed the good screen…..and put it right back onto the same Kindle I took it off of. Call it a practice run 😛

Why would I do that? The older model Kindle Keyboards are set up to allow browsing of the web via the 3G access…I now have a decent sized screen with FREE 3G web access 🙂 Total cost was about $85, plus I got a hard cover with built in light along with the working Kindle 🙂 So for $85 I have something that would cost me $180 or so off of Amazon, and wouldn’t allow me to surf the web. Used on eBay would be around $90-100, so I didn’t save much…but I DID learn the process…

Since I did it twice 😛
Peace,
db
