..let’s hope others learn from it.
Hurricane Sandy, Frakenstorm, or my favorite (coined by the artist of my FloridaHillbilly logo), The SnowBlowicane, whatever you call this week’s nasty weather that is pummeling the northeast, please take note of the possibility that on any random Tuesday things can go wrong.
Estimates of $10 to $30 billion in lost business. Millions are without power. Over 15,000 flights were cancelled. Hundreds are in need of rescue. And over 100 people, from the Caribbean to New York, are dead… all from this storm. I’ve said it before, bad things happen, and more often than not when you least expect it.
I’m not saying that if you have 30 days of food and water, a generator, electronic copies of all your important documents, a fire extinguisher, and a plan that you would fare any better than the next guy. But you definitely be in a position to handle it better, wouldn’t you?
I sign off most of my posts the same way, “just in case” for a reason. I try to plan for the worst but hope for the best, every day. I carry my backpack full of items just in case. I carry a knife just in case. I have multiple methods of starting a fire with me at all times…just in case. Many days go by without ever touching the stuff I load up every day. But once or twice a year, sometime more often, I run across a bad situation, and because of preparations I’ve made long ago, I am able to turn a possible very bad thing into a minor inconvenience.
I hope as a country, as we lick our wounds and recover from this catastrophe, that some of us learn that being prepared is not such a crazy idea. You carry auto, home, and health insurance “just in case”, right? So get a kit, make a plan. I hope you never need it, I really do.
And if you do what I say, please don’t backslide and stop updating, improving, or worse, carrying your kit. THAT is when Old Man Murphy will be sure to kick you.
So please take some personal responsibility for yourself and your family.
Just in case.
Peace,
db
PS- Bless the folks at Google…doing a search for “hurricane Sandy 2012” yields this:
It’s not all bad. West By God got enough snow to open their ski resorts. There was about an inch of snow on the ground here in KY this morning and a little on the brisk side. Just nasty enough that not a critter was out and about and I was having a devil of a time keeping my powder dry.
My parents were there a week or so before Sandy. They keep their plan in there head. My Dad got to help many a family member with getting what they needed to be prepared for a this storm (he did modify if just a little because of the snow factor). I told him, he should hire himself out as a hurricane preper consultant LOL
