My good friend and mentor, RidgeRunner was asking about my health yesterday, and in our email conversation, he sent me some pictures of his Kentucky get-away that he finally has sorted out. RidgeRunner and I see eye to eye on many things, wanting to get back to living in the hills being one of them. We both have reasons we won’t even be able to make it a full-time option, but he’s finally to the point that he has a spot to lay his head “in the hills”, at least from time to time. I was allowed to share some of it with you.
The email:
I plan on going to KY for deer and maybe turkey. I can probably shoot meat from the RV if I wanted but it’s more fun stalking
through the woods. I attached some photos of what I’ve got setup so far.
I’ll probably add a deck, a portable potable water tank, oil drum
incinerator, and a composting toilet next time up there. I really, really want a horse to ride – probably next spring for sure. We put in some fence posts and we are getting gates so we can ride the ridges without a bunch of hassle. It’s a 15 hour drive but that’s a hell of a lot closer than 3 days to CO.
You’re welcome to use the RV anytime.
Located far enough away from town, he has all the amenities he would ever need and then some. (I’ve seen him go camping with about a shoe box full of stuff, he’s a fan of the super-mega ultra light camping). His wife, like most wives, likes a little more comfort though. Compromise gets a married man far…and more peace and quiet.
His location wants for nothing, other than possibly a closer source of water. His kitchen is airy, with a nice morning breeze and good lighting throughout the day. The view from his kitchen window is priceless.
Dinner can be had easily, if a man puts his mind to it, its there for the taking. Some would say that RR likes to show off sometimes, when you look at his “shopping” methods for putting meat on the table. (Notice its a flintlock, not a percussion rifle, too.) He doesn’t consider it showing off, he likes to think of it as more fair for the game. I’ve seen him shoot though, the squirrels never had a chance.
RR has been a freelance photographer for a while now, most of the work I’ve seen from him is usually outdoors or animals stuff. This shot sums up him for me so well, that I wanted to use his email for today’s post. I glad he said yes. This is one of those picture worth a thousand words shots. Keep in mind this was taken within the last week or so.
RR is one of those friends I’m glad I have, if only to be able to live vicariously though as he lives his dreams. That’ll have to do for me.
Florida isn’t bad, once you get used to it. It’s just so FLAT! Having grown up in West Virginia though, it sure plays hell with my down-hill leg… 🙂
Peace,
db
PS- As always, Thanks, RR.
Looks good to me! Argument is the other way here. He takes everything but the kitchen sink. I want to throw a few things in the van and go. Glad to see everything went well and you are feeling better.
