“Bunnies implicated in the demise of Neanderthals“

The article states that fewer remains of small animals were found in the Neanderthal (Homo neanderthalensis) excavations sites versus the human (Homo sapien) excavation sites from the same period. 

Based on this article, I WILL survive!

Speaking of, I have 7 new baby rabbits currently, and two pregnant does that were bred this week. I will probably be working on harvesting a few for the smoker. SB and I talked over the weekend, and we agree it is time again.

In other personal rabbit news, I am considering setting up a colony pen for growing out my younger rabbits, and possibly to start a colony breeding pen. A colony pen is a large space, at least compared to a rabbit cage, that offers room for multiple rabbits to live, grow and breed as more naturally. This leaves breeding times and results more up to chance, but also makes for fewer cage maintenance headaches, and, I believe, gives the rabbits a more “rabbit-y” life, allowing them to interact with each other more. Still kicking around the idea.

And finally, I have finally installed my first suspended next box. This is a simple wire form, roughly the size and shape of a shoebox, that is suspended from the bottom of the cage. From what I’ve read and heard, particularly from the guys over at InTheRabbitHole.com, it is SO much better for raising litters with fewer headaches. If I don’t go with a colony setup, I’ll be wanting to install these in all of my breeder pens.
