Baited Breath Part 3 – Bait Shrimp

In the past year, I’ve eaten mullet, and sand fleas, and while both are considered bait locally, both are edible, and are on my “goto” list….if the world ever ends. Actually, neither were that bad, just not worth the effort when other options are available

A few days ago, I was fishing with a friend, and it was his turn to bring bait. We normally use live shrimp, and this time was no different. He brought almost three dozen live shrimp that ended up swimming in a circle, since the fish weren’t biting, and the bait didn’t get used. When we decided we’d had enough fun trying to catch a fish, he donated the shrimp to me, knowing I’d not let them go to waste.

I didn’t.

Live Shrimp

When I arrived home, all of the shrimp were still swimming, so I decided I would have fresh seafood for lunch, even it it wasn’t a fish I’d caught. And for the record, I’d only do this with live bait shrimp….dead ones are not a good idea…

Headless Shrimp

The first step was to behead them, one by one. Grasp the head and twist, and the meaty bit will separate from the head, some twisting my be needed. The heads were thrown to my ducks and chickens, so, ultimately, I will eat the heads too in the form of eggs.

 Headless Shrimp

Take a bowl of headless shrimp…..

 Shrimp and steam

And add them to a pot of boiling water with plenty of Cajun seasoning. Cook until pink, then remove. Optionally, Pull them off just as they start to turn and cover them with a bowl to hold in the heat and steam.

Allow them to cool a bit, then….

Shrimp shells

Peel and eat! The shells also went to the backyard birds to be converted into eggs…

They were quite tasty, and probably some of the freshest shrimp I’ve ever eaten. To be honest, I’ve done this before, and would do it again, unlike the canned mullet.

I really should go out shrimping to catch my own….I guess I’ll add that to my bucket list….

Or is that my “bait bucket” list?

Peace,
