Paleo Breakfast cereal! (Paleo Crunch)

Paleo Breakfast cereal! (Paleo Crunch)

Paleo is  the “contemporary” Paleolithic diet consists mainly of fish, grass-fed pasture raised meats, vegetables, fruit, roots, and nuts, and excludes grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar, and processed oils.

Breakfast (literally meaning “breaking the fast” of the night) is the first meal taken after rising from a night’s sleep, most often eaten in the early morning before undertaking the day’s work

Cereals are grasses cultivated for the edible components of their grain. The word cereal derives from Ceres, the name of the Roman goddess of harvest and agriculture. That bitch has made us fat!

But wait, Hillbilly! You can’t mix all three! The definition of Paleo says NO GRAIN!

Correct! However, another definition of breakfast cereal (or just cereal) is a food made from processed grains that is often eaten with the first meal of the day. It is often eaten cold, usually mixed with milk (e.g. cow’s milk, soy milkrice milk, almond milk), juice, water, or yogurt, and sometimes fruit, but may be eaten dry. (Soy and rice milk struck out due to not being Paleo).

I have found a replacement for the bowl of cereal to start the day that is not only tasty, healthy, and familiar (a big deal to some, they want to eat Paleo, only do it with familiar foods), it’s also completely Paleo-approved!

…………………………………………..

I LOVE to eat, and like I mentioned above, often prefer familiar foods. Since having gone on the Paleo lifestyle (not a diet, diets re short-term, Paleo is a life change), I’ve really missed having a bowl of cereal. Being preppers, we typically would buy 20+ boxes of Cinnamon Life when it would go on sale (FHB Tip: Buy quantity when prices are low!). We would plow through the first 4 or 5 boxes in a week before slowing down to allow it all to last until the
So while going through the book “Paleo Comfort Foods”, a HIGHLY recommended read for those eating Paleo, I found mention of “Steve’s Paleo Crunch” as the source for a pie crust. Plugging through the book, I couldn’t find any mention of the “Steve” guy or talk of his “crunch”. WTF? Off to Google, I went, to find this.next sale. Wow, do I miss boxed cereal….

Well THAT sounds tasty! But, like all things that are deemed healthy, a bit on the pricey side. And worse than that…unobtainable for me the next day! I WANT IT NOW! (We are SO jaded about the world we live in, I know and recognize this)

More searching revealed a great recipe here at This Mom Loves…. (Thanks Sara!)

Sara spoke well of the results, and that was enough for me, I had to try it….so here is my modified version, based on supplies I had available (I also doubled her recipe):

Paleo Crunch

Preheat oven to 325 F
In a large bowl combine:
1 cup raw pumpkin seeds
1 cup raw sunflower seeds
2 cup almond meal
2 cup shredded, unsweetened coconut
4 cups raw slivered or chopped almonds
In a measuring cup combine:
1 cup coconut oil
1 cup raw honey
2-4 tsp vanilla
1 tbs cinnamon
Add the wet ingredients to the dry and combine well. Spread in a thin layer over one or two baking sheets with sides (like a jelly roll pan). Place in preheated oven for 25 minutes. Redistribute the Paleo mix and return to the oven for 5-10 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool on the pan(s) for 5-10 minutes. Store in an airtight container.

I vac-sealed it in 1/2 gallon jars, stored in a cool dark place, saving some in a smaller

container to try it out.

I tasted it, then pulled the vac’d jars right back out and ate more of it. Damn this is GOOD!

Its granola! I couldn’t wait to try it for breakfast the next day.

The following morning, I excitedly grabbed a bowl, the Paleo Crunch, and some milk. Setting up my breakfast was joy! All the old familiar things! If I only had a cardboard box with an elf running from kids while telling me about the balloon-powered boat inside the box….

The taste was far better than I could have hoped for. The honey added just enough

sweetener to appease my craving. The crunch was perfect. And the combined flavors just worked.

The only downfall was the coconut oil. The flavor was fine, but since coconut oil is solid at 75 degrees Farenheit, the cold milk, at around 40 degrees, turning the oil into a solid sheen, coating everything, including the spoon 🙁 It wasn’t a horrible thing to me, but may be a turn off to some. An alternative might be olive oil, or avocado oil…though I’ll probably just stick with the coconut oil. The good side is that once it enters your mouth, it quickly re-melts, coating your mouth with its tasty goodness.

I can now sit down with a bowl of “cereal” for breakfast, just like the USDA has programmed me to do. Those bastards are making us fat!

I’ll probably also form it into bars for on-the-go snacking. Awesome!

As a side note to the Paleo lifestyle, I’ve lost almost 20 pounds as well as 4 inches off my waistline requiring me to add a new notch in my belt to keep my pants up! (The wife says I REALLY need to buy new clothes, my current wardrobe hangs on me.) I’ve also had more energy, felt healthier, have fewer “old man aches and pains”, and get to eat as much as I want, as long as its on the approved list. I suggest doing the research about it yourself, and giving it a try for 30 days. That was my original goal in November of 2011, and I’ve not looked back since. While the weight loss has tapered off, I still shave off a little more each month, all by a change in diet, no gym membership required.

A healthy body is as important in a crisis as knowledge, skills, and the proper tools. Make a part of your self-reliance be becoming a healthier you, however you do it.

Just sayin’

  1. I’ve meant to buy some Steve’s paleo crunch but my cheap butt couldn’t justify it. I’ll be trying this for sure. Thanks for sharing

  2. As the well-fed and loving Husband of Sara at “This Mom Loves” I can honestly say that this is one of my favorite treats that we make.

I’m also a taste-tester for Steve, and purchase his Krunch bars – as well as many of his other products (I travel a LOT for work and they are convenient to throw in a carry on), and love every convenient bite.

Sara’s recipe is definitely different, definitely tasty, and definitely easier on the pocket book if you pay attention to price and buying in bulk.

I’m now off to snack with the girls on some classic (Almond Flour) drop biscuits and Billberry Jam. NOM

    1. Good to hear from another Paleo consumer. Finding Paleo products is very difficult, tough the bright side, it forces us to start cooking again, a lost art in my opinion.

      Mmmmmmm biscuits….

      Peace,

  3. This “Paleo Breakfast” is great. I made it twice, first time I had all the ingredients so I combined a little and did not turn out to be the second time 🙂 But everything was as it should, try, all the recommendations of a great recipe.

  4. This is excellent. I have made this recipe and I highly recommend it. I did melt the coconut oil and combined all wet ingredients before adding to the dry. I did not have any texture issues because of the coconut oil being melted first.
Also I take some of this and add it to melted dark chocolate for a snack. Thank you for posting your recipes.

  5. Oh my! I made this so I could make the Lemon Bar recipe in Paleo Comfort Foods…it never made it to the Lemon Bars! I love it! Even my daughter says it’s delicious, and she’s not Paleo. My boyfriend too! He eats it with yogurt and I like it with almond milk, or just to snack on…
Thank you so much for this killer recipe!

  6. My first batch started to smell burnt after just the first 25 minutes and was inedible after cooling. Luckily I had halved your recipe, and then only put half of that in the pan, so I’m going to try the second half at lower heat, longer time and stir after 15 minutes. I think 325 was too high. It smelled great for the first 10-15 minutes, just heavenly, but then it turned in an instant and it was too late
