Not your grand daddy’s Sweet tea (Vodka infusions)

I have a soft spot for Jeremiah Weed’s Sweet Tea flavored vodka & bourbon blend. A shot of it in a pint mason jar, topped off with water has been my poison of choice for the last year or two. So smooth you barely notice the alcohol, it can sneak up on you fast.

But it’s so sweeeeeeet! Too sweet, to me.

Being the “I want to make my own” kind of guy, I looked up how to make it to allow me to have a less sweet version. It so simple its almost criminal.

Here’s what I did.

  1. Put a tea bag into a Mason jar.
  2. Cover the tea bag with your choice of vodka
  3. Put a lid and ring on it to seal it.
  4. Shake it a bit to thoroughly soak the tea bag.
  5. Let it sit for a couple hours, less for a weaker flavor, longer if you like it stronger.
  6. Remove the tea bag (let it drain to get alllll the vodka back out of it!

That’s it! Crazy simple!

I’ll be taking it a step or two further…I like the vodka/bourbon mix, so I’ll be mixing it 50/50 with some Jeremiah Weed. Since this bourbon is on the sweet side already I may omit the last step of adding simple syrup (equal parts water and sugar heated to dissolve the sugar) to taste. I may add some Jack Daniels instead, but that is not bourbon, that is Tennessee Whiskey.

  1. Regarding the bourbon issue — look up Old Crow. It is made via the sour mash process, therefore it has a consistency in flavor.

  2. Darrell, what the heck is going on here? Store bought vodka thrown in a mason jar with a store bought tea bag? When I clicked on this link I was expecting a detailed explanation of how you make your own West Virginia Mountain Moonshine in your backyard and mix it with the tea you grew in the special raised beds that are next to your still.

    1. Distilling alcohol is illegal. I’d hate to have to get involved with a lawyer….and technically, if I were making a distilled product in my backyard, it wouldn’t be West Virginia Mountain Moonshine (WVMM),as my backyard is pretty deep into the FLAT state of Florida. Same as with Champagne, unless it is made in the Champagne region of France its just a sparkling wine…., if I were to use a WV recipe and WV grain, I’d still not be able to call it WVMM, since it was distilled in Florida. It would just be rotgut.

As for the tea…sinensis assamica would be my best bet,as it likes a more tropical locale…I just have no spare room to grow something that costs pennies a pound, and I rarely consume.

Pick your battles, time and space being limited, I’m better off growing something I demand, like blueberries, bamboo, or watermelon radishes.

      1. Fair enough but, as usual, I disagree somewhat. First, it’s a recipe for moonshine – you can call it “South Florida Swamp Moonshine” for all I care – just let me have some. Second, alcohol is a necessity; I mean, seriously, what’s the point of surviving a post apocalyptic hell without it? In that regard, I’m thinking the guy that knows how to make it in large quantities will be the post apocalyptic hell Mark Zuckerberg…. 😉
